Глава 19. Серединка на половинку, или Как свести концы с концами при Черном лебеде

Пришло время сказать несколько слов в заключение. Временами я гиперскептик; временами я непреклонен, даже упрям в приятии чего-то абсолютно определенного. Конечно же я гиперскептик там, где другие, особенно те, кого я называю bildungsphilisters, легковерны, и легковерен там, где другие выказывают скептицизм. Я скептически отношусь к подтверждению (правда, только если ошибки могут дорого обойтись), но не к опровержению. Большой массив данных еще ничего не подтверждает, но единичный случай способен все опровергнуть. Я скептик, когда подозреваю, что речь идет о случайности из ряда вон выходящей, и доверчив, когда не сомневаюсь в ее рядовом характере.

Временами я ненавижу Черных лебедей, временами — обожаю. Я люблю случайность, которая порождает саму ткань жизни, счастливые случаи, успех художника Апеллеса, щедрые дары, за которые не взимается плата. Мало кто понимает красоту истории Апеллеса; большинство так боится ошибок, что подавляет в себе Апеллеса.

Временами я гиперконсервативен в ведении своих собственных дел, временами — гиперавантюрен. Здесь, пожалуй, нет ничего странного — кроме того, что мой консерватизм проявляется там, где другие рискуют, а авантюризм — там, где рекомендуется осторожность.

Меня меньше волнуют незначительные неудачи, больше— значительные, потенциально катастрофические. Я гораздо больше опасаюсь фондового рынка, особенно его «перспективных» сегментов, чем авантюрных спекуляций, — в первых заключены невидимые риски, вторые не предвещают ничего неожиданного, так как об их ненадежности известно заранее, и можно ограничить возможные потери, вкладывая меньшие суммы.

Меня меньше тревожат явные, осязаемые риски, больше— коварные, скрытые. Терроризм мне безразличнее, чем диабет. Я меньше беспокоюсь о том, о чем обычно беспокоятся люди, и больше — о вещах, о которых обычно не думают и не судачат (надо признаться, я вообще мало «трепыхаюсь» — стараюсь делать это только тогда, когда в силах что-то исправить). Мне предпочтительнее потерять, чем упустить шанс.

В конце концов, это тривиальное правило принятия решений: дерзость, когда есть перспектива поймать счастливого Черного лебедя (и неудача мало что значит), и крайняя осторожность, когда есть угроза напороться на дурного Черного лебедя. Я крайне напорист, когда ошибка в модели может принести мне выгоду, и пуглив до паранойи, когда она может навредить. Тут нет ничего особенно интересного, кроме того, что другие так не поступают. В финансах, например, для управления рисками пользуются сомнительными теориями, а безумные идеи подвергают «рациональному» рассмотрению.

Временами я интеллектуал, временами — хваткий практик. Я практичный ученый и интеллектуальный делец.

Временами я верхогляд, временами стремлюсь избегать верхоглядства. Я верхогляд в эстетических вопросах и избегаю верхоглядства в том, что касается рисков и оборотов. Эстетство заставляет меня ставить поэзию выше прозы, греков выше римлян, благородство выше изящества, изящество выше культуры, культуру выше эрудиции, эрудицию выше знаний, знания выше интеллекта и интеллект выше истины. Но только в сферах, где нет Черных лебедей. Я стараюсь быть предельно рациональным во всех ситуациях, кроме тех, когда на сцене появляется Черный лебедь.

Половина моих знакомых называет меня наглецом (вы прочли мои замечания о ваших местных платонизирующих профессорах), половина — идолопоклонцем (вы видели мою рабскую привязанность к Юэ, Байлю, Попперу, Пуанкаре, Монтеню, Хайеку и другим).

Временами я ненавижу Ницше, временами люблю его прозу.

Когда можно безболезненно опоздать на поезд

Однажды я получил еще один глобального плана совет, который (в отличие от дружеского совета, о котором я упоминал в главе 3) считаю применимым, мудрым и эмпирически подтвержденным. Мой парижский одноклассник, будущий романист Жан-Оливье Тедеско, изрек, убеждая меня, что не стоит бежать, чтобы успеть на метро: «Я не бегаю за поездами».

Презирайте свою судьбу. Теперь я не бросаюсь бежать ради того, чтобы уехать по расписанию. Такой совет может показаться очень немудрящим, но мне он подошел. Научившись не носиться за поездами, я оценил истинное значение изящества и эстетики в поведении, почувствовал, что это я управляю своим временем, расписанием и жизнью. Опаздывать на поезд обидно, только если ты бежишь за ним! Точно так же не добиваться такого успеха, какого ожидают от тебя другие, обидно, только если ты сам к нему стремишься. Ты оказываешься над мышиными бегами и очередью к кормушке, а не вне их, если поступаешь в соответствии с собственным выбором.

Уход с высокооплачиваемой работы, если это твое решение, принесет больше пользы, чем заработанные деньги (такой поступок может показаться безумным, но я пробовал, получается). Это первый шаг к тому, чтобы набраться мужества и послать судьбу к черту. Ты обретаешь гораздо больше власти над жизнью, если сам выбираешь критерии.

Мать-природа дала нам некоторые защитные механизмы: один из них, как в басне Эзопа, — способность поверить в то, что виноград, до которого мы не можем дотянуться (или не дотянулись), — кислый. Но принятое заранее твердое решение с презрением отказаться от винограда принесет куда лучшие плоды. Дерзай, будь тем, кто отказывается, если у тебя хватит стойкости.

Труднее проиграть в игре, в которой сам устанавливаешь правила.

В «чернолебяжьих» терминах это означает, что невероятное настигает тебя, только если ты позволяешь ему управлять тобой. Ты всегда можешь управлять тем, что делаешь сам; так пусть это будет твоей целью.

Однако все эти идеи, вся эта философия индукции, все эти проблемы со знанием, все эти сумасшедшие шансы и возможные тяжелые потери — всё бледнеет перед следующим метафизическим наблюдением.

Иногда я просто отказываюсь понимать, почему несвежая еда, холодный кофе, отказ принять в компанию и недостаточно любезный прием могут начисто испортить людям день, обманув их ожидания?

Вспомните, как в главе 8 я говорил о том, насколько сложно осознать, какой в действительности была вероятность совпадений, приведших к тому, что мы есть. Мы легко забываем, что жизнь сама по себе — удивительное везение, редчайшее событие, случайное происшествие гигантского масштаба.

Представьте себе пылинку рядом с планетой в миллиард раз крупнее Земли. Пылинка — перевес в пользу вашего рождения; большая планета — против него. Так что бросьте психовать по пустякам. Не уподобляйтесь тому брюзге, который, получив в подарок дворец, жалуется на плесень в ванной. Перестаньте смотреть в зубы дареному коню; помните, что вы — Черный лебедь. И спасибо, что прочитали мою книгу.

Эпилог. Белые лебеди Евгении

Евгения Краснова ушла в себя, что было необходимо, чтобы написать новую книгу. Она оставалась в Нью-Йорке, где ей было легче всего находиться в покое, наедине со своим текстом. После того как она уйму времени провела в толчее, надеясь встретиться с Ниро, чтобы отпустить колкость в его адрес, возможно — унизить его, возможно — вернуть, сосредоточиться было легко. Она отказалась от электронной почты, стала писать от руки, поскольку находила это занятие успокаивающим, и наняла секретаршу для перепечатки текста. Восемь лет она писала, стирала, исправляла, время от времени срывала злость на своей секретарше, приглашала на собеседование новых секретарш и снова спокойно писала. Ее квартира была полна дыма, бумаги покрывали все свободные поверхности. Как и другим художникам, ей казалось, что она не смогла в полной мере выразить то, что хотела, но все же чувствовала, что ей это удалось куда лучше, чем в первой книге. Она смеялась над публикой, превозносившей ее раннюю работу, так как сейчас та казалось ей слишком поверхностной, сделанной впопыхах и недостаточно тщательно.

Когда новая книга, удачно названная «Петлей», вышла в свет, Евгении хватило мудрости избегать общения с прессой и не обращать внимания на рецензии. Как и ожидал ее издатель, рецензии были хвалебные. Но, как ни странно, книгу покупали плохо. Должно быть, думал издатель, люди обсуждают книгу, даже не прочитав. Поклонники Евгении ждали ее нового творения и обсуждали его годами. Издатель, который теперь собрал большую коллекцию розовых очков и вел блестящую жизнь, сейчас сделал ставку на Евгению. У него не было и не предвиделось других хитов. Ему нужен был крупный выигрыш, чтобы заплатить за свою виллу в Карпантра, в Провансе, отдать долги в соответствии с финансовым соглашением, которое он заключил с бывшей женой, а также купить новый «ягуар» с откидным верхом (розовый). Он нисколько не сомневался, что не промахнется с долгожданной книгой Евгении, и не мог понять, почему почти все называли ее шедевром, но никто не покупал. Через полтора года «Петля» практически сошла с прилавков. Издатель, испытывавший большие денежные затруднения, думал, что знает причину: книга была «длинной как хрен знает что!» — Евгении следовало написать покороче. Пролив немало слез, которые, впрочем, принесли облегчение, Евгения подумала о персонажах трогательных романов Жоржа Сименона и Грэма Грина. Они существовали в состоянии отупляющей и безопасной посредственности. У второсортности есть свое очарование, подумала Евгения, а она всегда предпочитала очарование красоте.

Так что вторая книга Евгении тоже оказалась Черным лебедем.

Словарик

Академический либертарианец — некто, считающий (подобно мне), что знание подчиняется строгим правилам, но не академическим авторитетам, так как организованное знание заинтересовано в самоподдержании, а не обязательно в поиске истины (как и правительства). В Академии может остро стоять проблема экспертов, которые выдают на-гора эффектную, но ложную информацию, особенно в нарративных дисциплинах, чем, главным образом, и навлекают на нас Черных лебедей.

Безумец Локка — тот, кто, подобно Полу Сэмюэлсону, Роберту Мертону-младшему и Жерару Дебрё, делает точные и безупречно стройные умозаключения на основании неверных посылок, создавая таким образом «липовые» модели неопределенности, вера в которые превращает нас в потенциальные жертвы Черных лебедей.

Знание «ботаников»—убеждение в том, что непознаваемое в природе отсутствует или недостойно внимания. Существует даже разновидность скептицизма, практикуемая «ботаником».

Игровая ошибка — изучение случайности на примере маленького мирка азартных игр. В реальной жизни существует огромный пласт неопределенности, где действуют совершенно другие правила игры. Гауссиана, или ВИО (Великий Интеллектуальный Обман), — это результат применения игровой ошибки к случайности.

Искажение нарратива — наша потребность уложить историю в ряд связанных или несвязанных фактов.

Крайнестан — область, в которой одно наблюдение может сильно повлиять на итог.

Мандельбротовские Серые лебеди — Черные лебеди, появления которых можно ожидать (землетрясения, бестселлеры, обвалы фондового рынка), но свойства которых неопределимы и параметры не вычисляемы.

Нарративная дисциплина — дисциплина, состоящая в подгонке к прошлому убедительной и выразительной истории. Противопоставляется экспериментальной дисциплине.

Неопределенность потерянных, то есть людей, которые переносят конкретные источники неопределенности, вроде принципа неопределенности, в реальную жизнь и беспокоятся о внутриатомных частицах, забывая, что мы не можем предсказать завтрашние кризисы.

Огрех-перевертыш — принятие отсутствия свидетельств о Черных лебедях (или о чем-то еще) за свидетельство отсутствия Черных лебедей (или еще чего-то). Беда статистиков и других людей, у которых заскорузли мозги от решения слишком большого количества уравнений.

Одураченный случайностью — тот, кто путает удачу с детерминизмом, плодя разные предрассудки с практическими последствиями, среди которых вера в то, что более высокие заработки в некоторых профессиях — результат мастерства, хотя в них есть значительная компонента удачи.

Ошибка лотерейного билета — наивная аналогия, уравнивающая инвестиции в накопление положительных Черных лебедей с собиранием лотерейных билетов. Лотерейные билеты не масштабируемы.

Ошибка подтверждения (или платоническое подтверждение). Вы ищете случаи, которые подтверждают ваши убеждения, вашу конструкцию (или модель), и находите их.

Платоничность — сосредоточенность на четко очерченных и легко различимых объектах, скажем, треугольниках (или же ясных социальных понятиях, таких как дружба и любовь), в ущерб более аморфным и менее определенным структурам.

Платоническая складка — место, где наши платонические идеи входят в контакт с реальностью и где проявляются побочные эффекты моделей.

Проблема индукции — логико-философское продолжение проблемы Черного лебедя.

Проблема обратного проектирования. Легче предсказать, как кубик льда растает в лужу, чем, глядя на лужу, угадать форму кубика льда, из которого она могла образоваться. Эта «обратная задача» заставляет с подозрением относиться к нарративным дисциплинам (таким как курсы истории).

Проблема «пустых костюмов» (или проблема «экспертов»). Некоторые специалисты не имеют никакого профессионального преимущества перед остальным населением, но по какой-то причине и вопреки опыту считаются экспертами: клинические психологи, экономисты, «эксперты» по рискам, статистики, политические аналитики, финансовые «эксперты», военные аналитики и т. д. Они «приправляют» свои заключения красивыми фразами, профессиональным жаргоном, сложными расчетами и часто носят дорогие костюмы.

Проблема скрытых свидетельств состоит в том, что, оглядываясь на прошлое, мы видим не всё, а только наиболее светлые моменты процесса.

Распределение вероятности — модель, используемая для вычисления шансов различных событий, то есть того, как они «распределяются». Говоря о гауссовом распределении, мы имеем в виду, что с помощью гауссианы можем просчитать вероятность различных событий.

Слепота в отношении Черного лебедя — недооценка роли Черного лебедя и иногда переоценка одного конкретного.

Случайность как неполная информация — часто мы не в состоянии предугадать событие потому, что наше знание о его причинах неполно, а вовсе не потому, что оно обладает свойствами, делающими его непредсказуемым.

Среднестан — область, где правит посредственность и где не часты оглушительные успехи или провалы. Ни одно отдельное наблюдение не может заметно повлиять на совокупную величину. В Среднестане берет свое начало гауссиана. Между гауссианой и степенными законами существует такое же качественное различие, как между газом и водой.

Статистический порочный круг (или проблема зацикленности статистики). Нам нужны данные, чтобы верно оценить распределение вероятностей, с которым мы имеем дело. Как нам узнать, что у нас их достаточно? Из распределения вероятностей. Если оно нормальное, то хватит нескольких точек. Как нам определить, что оно нормальное? На основании данных. Итак, нам нужны данные, чтобы понять, какое перед нами распределение вероятностей, и нам нужны параметры распределения вероятностей, чтобы понять, сколько данных нам нужно. Это порочный круг, который трудно преодолеть и который довольно бесстыдно обходят, прибегая к гауссиане и ее родичам.

Стратегия Апеллеса — стратегия поиска встреч с наибольшим количеством «добрых» Черных лебедей.

Стратегия «штанги» — метод, заключающийся в соединении оборонительного и крайне авантюрного подходов. Основная часть активов должна изолироваться от всех зон неопределенности, а их малая доля — пускаться в рискованную игру.

Футурологическая слепота — наша естественная неспособность принимать в расчет свойства будущего; сродни аутизму, который мешает принимать в расчет наличие других сознаний.

Эпилогизм — свободный от всяческих теорий подход к истории, состоящий в накоплении необобщаемых фактов и основанный на осознании опасности выискивания причин.

63Здесь мы затрагиваем довольно сложную и тонкую эпистемологическую проблему. В зоне влияния счастливых Черных лебедей практически все, чего до сих пор не случалось в прошлом, должно принести благо. Оглянувшись назад, мы не увидим невероятных достижений, например в биотехнологии, и значит, есть возможность, пускай небольшая, что продажи в этой области вдруг станут колоссальными (если изобретут лекарство от рака, или облысения, или головной боли, или от отсутствия чувства юмора). А в зоне влияния вредоносных Черных лебедей все наоборот. Там, если судить на основе прошлого опыта, есть опасность переоценить хорошие качества. Вспомните банковский кризис 1982 г.: наивному наблюдателю банки казались финансово состоятельными, а на самом деле это было не так. Страховые компании бывают двух видов. Одни — рядовые, из Среднестана, с высоким уровнем диверсификации — например, страхование жизни. Другие страхуют более серьезные, взрывные «чернолебяжьи» риски, которые обычно продаются перестраховочным фирмам. По имеющимся данным, перестраховщики терпят убытки на андеррайтинге все последние двадцать лет, но они прекрасно понимают: могло быть гораздо хуже. За эти двадцать лет не случалось крупных катастроф, а чтобы пришлось распрощаться с бизнесом, им хватило бы и одной. Ученые-финансисты, которые занимаются «оценкой» страховок, как-то упускают это из виду.

Теперь автору защищаться гораздо проще. Вместо негодующих посланий главному редактору можно просто поместить в Сети собственную рецензию на рецензию. Если критик атаковал автора ad hominem (с переходом на личности), он получит адекватный ответ, тоже ad hominem, можно, наконец, подвергнуть сомнению компетентность обозревателя, не забыв позаботиться о том, чтобы контррецензия сразу же попала в поисковые системы или в Википедию. Эта энциклопедия устроена по принципу «снизу вверх».

67Ко всем нашим бедам, банки теперь еще меньше защищены от Черных лебедей и игровой ошибки, поскольку в числе их сотрудников есть «ученые», которые занимаются рисками. Гигантская фирма «Джей Пи Морган» поставила весь мир под угрозу, введя в 1990-е гг. «риск-метрику», шарлатанский метод, посредством которого взялись управлять рисками, спровоцировав распространение игровой ошибки и повсеместно заместив скептически настроенных Жирных Тони докторами Джонами. (Есть еще похожий метод — «стоимость под риском», — основанный на количественном измерении риска.) Субсидируемая государством компания «Фэнни Мэй», по моим скромным прикидкам, сидит на пороховой бочке и может взорваться от малейшего чиха. Но не извольте беспокоиться: их многочисленные ученые посчитали, что такое развитие событий «маловероятно».

68Тот, кто не любит технических подробностей, или интуитивист может пропустить эту главу, так как она касается различных деталей «гауссовой кривой». Также ее можно пропустить, если вы относитесь к категории тех счастливцев, которые с гауссианой незнакомы вообще.

69Один из наименее понятых аспектов гауссианы — это ее слабость и уязвимость в оценке хвостовых событий. Шансы отклонения на 4 сигмы (сигма — индикатор степени отклонений) вдвое выше, чем на 4,15 сигмы. Шансы отклонения на 20 сигм — в триллион раз выше, чем на 21 сигму! Это значит, что небольшая ошибка в измерении сигмы приведет к огромной недооценке вероятности. То есть относительно некоторых событий мы можем ошибиться в триллион раз.

Все крайне упрощается, если понять, что есть две, и только две, возможные парадигмы: немасштабируемая (вроде гауссовой) и другая (как мандельбротовская случайность). А вот на съезде «Национальной ассоциации в поддержку богатых людей» один наверняка затмевал бы остальных и даже среди сверхбогатеев очень малый процент представлял бы большую долю общего богатства.
